The City University of Macau, formerly known as the University of East Asia, established in 1981, was renamed in 2011 and has adopted the development strategy of “Rename, Restructure, Transform, and Upgrade”. The University pursues the path of a metropolitan university and integrates with urban lives, achieving excellence in humanities, art, business, commerce, new engineering and social science. It strives to realise its mission and fulfil its social responsibility of “Rooted in Macao and Serving the Greater Bay Area”. Guided by the motto of “Virtue, Knowledge, Practice” and leveraging the integrated development of higher education in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the University is dedicated to nurturing practical talent for Macao and the region and keeping up its efforts in providing intelligence support to urban and social development.
The City University of Macau now has about 7,500 students. It has set up nine faculties, including the Faculty of Business, Faculty of Data Science, Faculty of Finance, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Innovation and Design, Faculty of International Tourism and Management, School of Education, School of Law, Institute for Research On Portuguese-Speaking Countries. CityU offers 11 bachelor’s degree programmes, 19 master’s degree programmes and 14 doctoral degree programmes, including over 40 programmes in Chinese and English mediums. The University adopts a multi-learning model featuring “international learning”, “experimental learning”, “cross-cultural learning”, “peer learning”, and “value-added learning”. Currently, CityU is one of the four comprehensive universities in Macao offering full-scale degree programmes at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. CityU was ranked 89th among the top 100 universities on the “2020 ShanghaiRanking's Ranking of Top Universities in Greater China”. It strives to enhance the quality of teaching and takes the lead in offering programmes with international accreditation. The Hospitality and Tourism Management disciplines at bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree levels are the only disciplines in Macao accredited TedQual quality education by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) at all degree levels. Besides, the Hospitality and Tourism Management discipline was listed on the “2021 ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects” and ranked 52nd among the top 20% of higher institutions globally in the Hospitality & Tourism Management category.
